Most foreigners only know about Bali as a resort island in Indonesia. And when it comes to Lombok, they think that Mount Rinjani is its biggest attraction. While it is quite amazing and sure deserves a visit, that doesn’t mean there’s no other tourist spot on the island.
Take the beaches, for example – there are dozens of fascinating beaches all over the shores, and, despite the fact that they’re basically the same thing, you’ll find that they are all very special. We’ll take about Tanjung Bloam today: it’s not the most popular landmark in Lombok, but if you appreciate Mother Nature and want to see just how beautiful the ocean can be early in the morning, then make sure to put it on your list.
This beach is located in East Lombok, and that part of the island is famous for the lush forests and amazing views of the ocean. To get there, you’ll have to drive for hours and maybe even get directions from the locals, as Indonesia is not really big on signs and people just remember the right path.
Thankfully, even if you don’t know a single word in Sasak (which I assume you don’t), you’ll still be able to understand exactly where you need to go to reach your destination. I gotta say in advance that those bumpy roads and stiff climbs won’t be easy and will take a lot of energy. But, at the end of the day, it will all be worth it, trust me on that.
What Is Tanjung Bloam All About?
Alright, now that we’ve learned the basics, let us dig deeper and see why this spot should be included in your list of must-sees. First of all, Tanjung Bloam is a virgin beach, which means it’s never crowded by tons of people and gives the foreigners an amazing opportunity to be alone with the breath-taking views.
It’s always a compromise in Lombok: you either go with the big, fancy, and well-developed places that are always crowded, noisy, and trashy or choose the more peaceful, tranquil landmarks with an entirely different atmosphere. Tanjung Bloam is definitely a “quiet” place, one that will welcome you with open arms and make you feel at home.
There will be some visitors on that beach, of course, and a lot of locals, but compared to the more “trendy” beaches, it feels empty and even abandoned. That is exactly why you’ll have a hard time getting there. The government is spending resources on improving conditions at the most popular spots, leaving the rest out.
In some ways, that’s a pro, not a con, as nothing says “Tropical Island” more than roads with no signs and beaches with no cafes, restaurants, or any other public facilities. The sad part is – you might feel lonely sitting there all by yourself. But then again, nobody’s stopping you from visiting the bigger tourist magnets whenever you please. Switch it up to keep it fresh!
Learning More About The Tanjung Bloam Beach
Probably the most important thing to remember about this beach is that it’s not very welcoming. What do I mean by that? Well, there are some pretty strict (and ridiculous, if you ask me) regulations at work, and in order to get there, you’ll need a special ticket. If you’re planning on visiting Tanjung Bloam in the nearest future, then go to the official website and order one there.
Or, if you’re already in Lombok and go straight to “Jeeva Klui” – you’ll also be able to get a ticket there. Here comes the bad news: that resort is located on the other side of the island, and in order to get from one spot to the other, you’ll need up to three hours. I told you it is ridiculous!
So, why all the hassle, and why should you even consider going to this beach if there are so many restrictions? Let me tell you this: if you buy your ticket online, everything will be just fine. As for the bad roads, they’re a regular thing in Indonesia. Besides, some people want to visit every single landmark, and the fact that it’s not open to everyone only makes it a bigger “target” for them.
Furthermore, the beautiful white sand and the enchanting crystal-clear water will make all of your troubles go away. Finally, Tanjung Bloam is famous for the cliffs that look like the remnants of an ancient civilization. They truly are quite amazing.
Appreciating Mother Nature And Being One With It
There are two huge cliffs in total, and while the one on the left resembles some sort of a cake, the one on the right has an “otherworldly” shape. And, it is connected to the beach, which means you’ll be able to literally walk to the edge of it and feel the cold water right under your feet. Don’t forget to grab your favorite camera for some thrilling shots.
Go ahead and check out the photographs I put in the beginning – doesn’t this place look absolutely magical? Alright, now you know why Tanjung Bloam is a special landmark. Along with the natural beauty of the shore, the sand, and the ocean, these cliffs are a symbol of Lombok, one that shouldn’t be passed by.
Sometimes, even the simplest and most basic things are capable of impressing and touching us deeply. That’s one of the reasons people travel: to see new things, to make new memories and to enjoy these precious moments with your loved ones. The hills are covered in trees, proving that nature always finds a way to prosper.
If you want the best seats in the house, go to the Western part of TB and climb the hills. Up there, everything looks even better, and it would be a good idea to stand in the middle of the cliff and ask someone to take a picture of you from this spot. Once it’s done, go to the center of the Tanjung Bloam beach and have a snack – you’ll get hungry after that photoset!
Some General Tips For Your Trip
Please remember that swimming is not possible here. The reason – the waves are pretty big and steep, and that means you might end up hurting yourself. Surfing is also not recommended, but if you consider yourself a pro, give it a shot. Sit on the shore, read a book, drink something and talk – that’s pretty much all you can do at the Tanjung Bloam beach.
If that gets boring after a day or two, you can follow my example and check out some of the closest landmarks. If you take a look at the map, you’ll see that the famous Pink Beach is only 3 kilometers away. Rent a scooter and make some great selfies with the beach serving as the background.
The whole coast is literally covered in beaches; unfortunately, there aren’t any hotels/guest houses in the area. Same goes for the cafes and restaurants. You will find some food stalls here and there, though, and maybe even some bungalows. However, since this isn’t the most popular part of the island, the infrastructure is weak, just as I said in the beginning.
The good news is – you can see most of East Lombok in a day and still have time to go back to the hotel on the other side. Make sure to plan everything and take a couple of snacks, a bottle of water, a sun cream, and some money to rent a bike or a car. GPS doesn’t always work in Lombok – check out the map below to memorize at least some of it (or take a picture on your phone)
How To Find Tanjung Bloam
The exact address of this heavenly beach is Sekaroh village, Jerowaru sub-district, East Lombok. From the International Lombok Airport, the shortest ride will take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The shortest route is also the most crowded one, meaning traffic won’t always be smooth. It starts at LOP and runs through Jl. Raya Praya – Mujur, Jl. Raya Sengkerang and Jl. Raya Keruak.
The longest route, through Jl. Sengkol is 72 kilometers long and will take more than 2 hours to reach the destination. However, since you’ll be driving along the shore, you’ll be able to check out the views from some of the best beaches in Lombok. I say it’s worth the additional 15-20 minutes.
When on a foreign island, it’s always better to order a taxi. Same goes for this trip to Tanjung Bloam. Yes, renting is also an option, especially if you love bikes and the wind in your face, but in my experience, most tourists get exhausted after a long flight and a 2-hour drive. Therefore, most foreigners prefer to relax in the back seat of the taxi and check Lombok out from the rear window. The choice, as always, is yours!
